Cyprus is famous for its sandy beaches and sparkling waters. For anyone in search of beach life but far from the madding crowds of tourists, here are three of the island’s best coastal villages.
I’ve described in these newsletters the fabulous coastal cities of Cyprus: expat-favourite Paphos, high-rise Limassol and levantine Larnaca. I took you for a tour of the cool and peaceful villages of the Troödos Mountains, where you will find your perfect rural retreat. But what is there for those who want a combination of tranquil Mediterranean village life and a stunning coastal location? Here are three of the best coastal villages the island has to offer.

Pomos
In the north west of the island, on the edge of Paphos Forest, Pomos is an attractive seaside village. The quaint fishing harbour is the focal point for village life and an example of the ‘real Cyprus’, somewhere you can sit and watch the world go by as small fishing boats return from a day on the sparkling seas with laden nets. Then you can head to a local taverna to enjoy that same catch again, on a plate. Situated right next to the harbour is Kanalli beach; a quiet retreat with views of the hills in the distance. This is a shingle beach; but the sweeping sands of Paradise beach and Pachiammos beach are just a short drive away if you prefer your shingle slightly more eroded. Pomos is also home to its very own natural history museum if geology, fauna and flora are your thing.
If you fancy living just 100 metres from the sea you can find a deluxe three-bedroom beachfront villa, complete with private swimming pool, in Pomos for €390,000 on Rightmove Overseas.
Pervolia
This idyllic village offers its 1,600 residents the best of both worlds: the peace and quiet of small town life, together with convenient access to bustling Larnaca and its international airport, located less than 15 minutes’ drive up the road. After a relaxing day on the local beach, which remains relatively quiet even in peak season, you’ll receive a warm welcome from the locals as you sample the delights of the traditional restaurants and tavernas.
You can find a four-bedroom villa, complete with private swimming pool, in a quiet residential area of Pervolia for less than €230,000 on Rightmove Overseas.
Pissouri
Split into two distinct communities, the main Pissouri village – three kilometres from the sea, nestled on the Cape Aspro ridge – and Pissouri beach, this is still a working village where farmers tend the surrounding fields within sound the of the waves. This rural charm has enticed a number of expats to the area in recent years, which has swelled the population to just over 1,000. Once in residence you can take a full part in village life, attending the magnificent gothic church or enjoying a spot of opera at the local amphitheatre. If you’re in need of an urban fix Paphos – to the west – and Limassol – to the east – are both a 30-minute drive away.
If the idea of living in a forest with the sparkling sea just a stone’s throw away is right up your street, you can find a three-bedroom villa, complete with private swimming pool and garden, in Pissouri for €275,000 on Rightmove Overseas.
