The Ionian Islands lie west of mainland Greece. They are loved for their turquoise waters, beaches and beautiful landscapes. In total, there are twenty Ionian Islands, but some of those are uninhabited.

Houses on the Ionian islands
As the region was once ruled by the Venetians, the islands have developed a distinct cultural identity with many Italian influences. During the centuries of rule by Venice, they acquired Venetian names. Some are still known by these names by the English and Italians. For example, in English Zakynthos is known as Zante, and Kerkyra is known as Corfu.
The architecture in the Ionian islands is unique and unlike what you see in other parts of Greece. There are many fortresses, churches, mansions and historic buildings that were constructed during the Venetian occupation.
Kefalonia

Fresher autumn temperatures make exploring the island of Kefalonia, and viewing properties, more comfortable. The scenery is spectacular, with stunning views of Mount Ainos with it’s forests of fir trees, sandy beaches and the Lixouri and Erissos Peninsula. Plus, you can take a guided boat tour of the the Melissani caves. The caves have a deep blue underground lake and a section where the sun comes in on the chrystal clear water.

Nice and quiet
Being the largest of the Ionian Islands, but not the most touristy, Kefalonia doesn’t feel crowded, especially during the autumn. If you dream of peace and tranquillity, away from people and pollution, Kefalonia in autumn could be the place for you.
The Feast of Saint Gerasimos
To get a real feel for the island and it’s people, try and visit around the 20th October. This is when they celebrate the islands patron saint, St. Gerasimos. The celebration includes parading St. Gerasimos’ remains through the streets. Followed by a party into the early hours with music, dancing, eating and drinking.

Walks and picnics by the beach are really magical in autumn. You can find yourself having a beach all to yourself. Myrtos Beach is one such outstanding location, that is in a truly idyllic spot. In the autumn time, Myrtos Beach can be virtually empty and can be explored and enjoyed in solitude. Rather different from when it appeared in the mine explosion scene in the film Captain Corelli’s Mandolin.
Temperatures in autumn
Temperatures on Kefalonia during the months of September, October and even November are typically in their twenties. The island also has blue skies, pretty much year round. The pleasantly warm temperatures are perfect for travelling around the island and viewing property.
Getting to Kefalonia
Kefalonia airport connects the island with Athens International Airport. EasyJet and British Airways also do direct flights to Kefalonia from the UK.
Zakynthos

Zakynthos (Zante) boasts spectacular nature and villages. The island is famous for its beautiful scenery, crystal clear sea water, and lively culture.
Autumn tranquillity
At the end of the summer, when there are less tourists, the island becomes a tranquil paradise. Zakynthos is a popular summer holiday destination, attracting approximately 850,000 tourists each year. However, when the tourists have gone home, only 41,000 residents remain. This is when home owners on Zakynthos really feel the benefits of having the freedom to explore the island with few cars about.
Peaceful beaches
The turquoise sea and stunning beaches of Zakynthos are popular with both tourists and the “Caretta Caretta” sea turtles. After the heat of summer, the autumn months bring peace and quiet to the beautiful beaches of Zakynthos. In 2024, Navagio beach was closed, due to cliffs falls. However, from a boat you can still view the famous shipwreck stranded on the sand.
In September, the sea temperature is 18.5℃ /65F, and in October 15℃ /59F. Therefore you can enjoy a relaxing swim, or sunbath on a quiet beach, right into the autumn. Beaches such as Agios Nikolaos and Gerakas are also perfect places to go for a stroll and enjoy the views.
Zakynthos climate
The weather in Zakynthos throughout the autumn is pleasantly mild. When the summer heat gives way to more bearable weather, spending time outside becomes even more of a pleasure. The island’s historic sites and natural beauty can be explored during the day, when temperatures range between 20℃ and 28℃.

In the autumn, Zakynthos’ natural landscape is at its most picturesque. Askos stone park, in the area of Volimes, operates throughout the year. The park is home to many trees and plants, as well as wildlife, such as deer.
In September the last of the grapes are being picked, and from October to December you can see the locals harvesting the olives. You may even come across a festival to celebrate the new harvest.
For stunning views of the coast and the Ionian Sea, visit the hill of Kampi. Where the sunset views are particularly beautiful. Another great place to see is the Korakonissi arched rock formation.
Just as breathtaking, are the Blue Caves, especially in the autumn, when the sun’s rays make the water sparkle with an incredible blue hue. These sea caves can easily be visited by boat.
Zakynthos wildlife
Zakynthos is a great place to see wildlife. Sea turtles lay their eggs on the island, and you might see them hatching from the end of September until the beginning of October. The National Marine Park of Zakynthos is devoted to protecting them and you can take a guided excursion to learn more about these amazing creatures.
Places to visit in autumn
As well as the many churches, monasteries and museums, another place worth visiting is the Castle of Zakynthos, set on a hill above Zante Town, in the region of Bohali. Built on the ruins of an ancient acropolis, named Psofida, the castle has lovely viewsand a beautiful park.
Getting to Zakynthos
You can get to Zakynthos Island by plane from Athens international airport and many European airports. Alternatively, a ferry runs from the port of Killini in the Peloponnese.
As the island is a famous summer destination, its airport receives flights from several countries, including Italy, France, Germany, and the UK. The airport is located just 3 km from the town and you can reach it by car, bus, or taxi.

Lefkada

Lefkada, also known as Lefkas, is the fourth largest island in the Ionian sea. Popular with families and couples, the island of Lefkada offers, churches monasteries, picturesque villages, lush vegetation, idyllic coves, turquoise waters, stunning beaches, cultural heritage and welcoming locals.
Autumn activities on Lefkada
Autumn is a great time of year for outdoor activities on Lefkada. Whether you enjoy cycling or walking, there are trails to suit everyone. Lefkada’s mountain and coastal areas also offer many routes for mountain biking through stunning scenery. Plus, watersports include windsurfing, kite surfing, paragliding and sailing. There is also a very well equipped marina.
Beaches on Lefkada
The most famous beach is Porto Katsikihas on the southwestern side of the island. Then there is Kathisma, a long sandy beach enjoyed by windsurfing and kitesurfing enthusiasts, as well as Egremni beach.
Lefkada’s autumn weather
The weather remains warm well into September and October. In October, the temperatures are between 16℃ and 28℃. On the coldest nights, the temperatures only drop to 11℃. A lovely temperature to enjoy this relaxing time of year.
Places to visit in autumn
The mild temperatures create a good opportunity for outdoor activities on the island, such as hiking at the waterfalls of Nydri and other beautiful natural locations. Alternatively, you can go on long strolls around the charming Town of Lefkada. Here you can visit the Phonograph Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Folklore Museum.
Getting to Lefkada
Located near the islands of Kefalonia and Ithaca, Lefkada island is separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. A floating swing bridge above the channel and a bridge above the lagoon connect the island to the mainland. These bridges make Lefkada the only Greek island that can be reached by road.
Many visitors choose to fly to Aktion Airport which is located in Preveza. British airways and easyJet currently do flights direct to Preveza in the autumn. From there it is a 1 hour 15 minute drive to Lefkada.
Places to visit on Lefkada
The village of Nidri is a popular tourist resort located 16 km south of the town Lefkada. Today, the village has a population of 800 people, mostly engaged in tourism and fishing.
Charming fishing villages worth visiting include Nikiana, at the foot of Mount Skaros and Agios Nikitas. Or, head inland to the mountain villages of Karya and Egklouvi.
Lefkada is well known for its monasteries. The most important being The Monastery of Panagia Faneromeni in Lefkada. Other attractions include The Lighthouse of Lefkas located at Cape Ducato, and the ruined castle at Agia Mavra. There are also many museums and churches to see.
