Greece’s tourism industry booms in early 2022
It looks as though 2022 is going to be a good year for the Greek economy. The latest figures from the Bank of Greece show that Greece’s tourist revenue grew 306.2% from January to February of this year, equating to €273 million.
This is a positive sign for the country which is heavily dependent on tourism. The sector accounts for 25% of Greece’s economic output and one in four jobs.
The latest figures also show a 282.5% increase in inbound travellers and that those visitors are spending more during their trip. The main travellers were from Germany, France, the UK and the US.
No more travel restrictions
Greece has recently announced that it will be lifting all Covid-19 entry restrictions in May. From the 2 May, all travellers will be able to visit Greece whether they have been vaccinated or not. There will also be no need to present proof of Covid recovery or a negative Covid test on arrival.
Covid cases in Greece have fallen steadily in April, with the rolling 7-day average currently at 6,276 cases. This is much lower than the country’s peak of 35,451 in January. In addition, 73% of the population is now fully vaccinated.

Travel platform, Tripadvisor, has released its annual ‘Travelers’ Choice Awards for 2022: the top 25 beaches in Europe’ list, and two Greek beaches have made the top 10.
Balos Lagoon in Kissamos, Crete was ranked the fifth best beach in Europe. One traveller quoted, “it feels like another planet. A breathtaking place with a lagoon on one side and a beach on the other”. Kissamos itself is a modern seaside town, 40km from Chania town, surrounded by olive trees and the shimmering turquoise waters of the ocean.
Coming in at sixth place is Kleftiko Beach in Milos, Cyclades. Kleftiko is a stunning cove hidden among an extraordinary rock formation. It is known for its impressive white volcanic rocks, sparkling waters and sea caves, and it can only be reached by boat!
