There has undoubtably been a global shift from office working to home working over the last few years. The coronavirus pandemic has seen many people re-evaluate their priorities in life, placing higher importance on quality time with family, mental and physical well-being and a better work life balance.

According to research by Finder, 26% of the UK population plan to continue working from home in the future.

Many jobs are now advertising new roles as fully remote, meaning employees can pretty much work from anywhere they want! As such, the concept of working remotely for a UK employer from abroad, such as Spain, has grown in popularity. After all, who wouldn’t want to swap the grey skies of the UK for the blue ones of the Mediterranean?

Fully remote employees can pretty much work from anywhere they want

You will, of course, need to consider the visa and tax requirements, and check that your UK employer is happy for you to work from Spain.

If you only plan to spend a few months a year working remotely from Spain, then you may be able to just follow the ’90 day rule’ and not need a visa.

On the other hand, if you want to spend longer than 90 days at a time in Spain, you will need a visa. At the moment, the best option for remote workers is the Spanish non-lucrative visa which grants residency in Spain but does not give you the right to work for a Spanish employer. However, you can work for a UK employer with this visa.

The non-lucrative visa requires you to spend at least 183 days a year in Spain, meaning you would become a tax resident of Spain. This topic is rather complicated so we would recommend seeking professional legal advice for your personal situation.

However, Spain has recently announced it will be introducing a new digital nomad visa. This will allow internationals to live in Spain while working remotely for companies located outside the country without needing a full work visa. It is still in discussion stages but it is thought that it will allow people to spend between six and 12 months living and working remotely in Spain, with the possibility of an extension.
