For example, looking further afield, we see that South Africa receives its fair share of interest from retirees. A recent survey conducted by Statistics South Africa found that more than 60 percent of the foreign nationals trying to retire in South Africa hailed from Europe. The study found that of the 680 applications for retired person status in South Africa, 26 percent were issued to United Kingdom nationals.
Brits don’t appear to be being put off their dreams of retiring to Europe by the approaching referendum.
As the evidence suggests, Brits don’t appear to be being put off their dreams of retiring to Europe by the approaching referendum, due to take place on June 23rd. Currently there are 760,000 British residents living in Spain, more than in any other European country. At time of writing, it remains unclear as to what a Brexit would mean for these folks. It has been suggested that by living in Spain these expats will have “acquired rights” that will afford them the same rights post-Brexit as they have currently.
Although many Brits are expressing a desire to retire to Spain, until we know the outcome of June’s vote, it remains unclear as to whether the Spanish market will fully benefit from the increased interest.
