Tell me about Vigo…
Vigo in Galicia is a historic port city on the Atlantic Ocean. The northwestern city offers a totally different atmosphere to more well-known Spanish destinations, such as Málaga, Barcelona or Benidorm. Vigo is perfect for those unsure if they’ll sizzle too much in Spain’s south, as temperatures are not as high, and the Atlantic brings in a breeze. From May to October, Vigo experiences highs in the 20s, with July seeing the most warmth with an average daily maximum of 26°C. The coldest month is January, with highs of 14 degrees and 14 days of rain. Another big plus is that property prices are more affordable than other major coastal spots. If you are looking for a large, old, characterful home, Vigo is ideal. You can also find flash penthouses in the city centre.
The best fish in all of Spain?
One of Vigo’s biggest selling points is that it (arguably) produces the highest quality fish in Spain. For centuries, it has been one of the largest and most important ports in Europe, with the fish industry as a staple – so, you could say that they’ve perfected the art. There are eighteen restaurants in Vigo featured in the Michelin Guide, but you don’t have to pay high prices to tuck into delicious fresh fish.
Pretty coastline
The largest and most famous beach in Vigo is Samil. It pulls in many families with its choice of facilities, including a skating rink and swimming pools. Additionally, Vigo is home to secluded, quiet beaches, such as A Fontaíña Beach, known as the “Little Mermaid’s beach”. You’ll find favourite places to swim, bathe and enjoy water sports – just remember that this isn’t the Mediterranean, so you may need a wetsuit outside of the summer months, but it does make more an exciting surf!
Old Town
Vigo boasts of a gorgeous Old Town made up of historic buildings, such as the Casa de Arines, a Gothic mansion dating back to the 15 century. You’ll also find lovely artisan shops and plenty of eateries.
Ideal for hikers
Vigo draws in overseas buyers looking for an outdoorsy lifestyle. It has terrific options for hikers, whether it be along the coast, rural paths, forests or mountains.
The Cíes islands
Vigo possesses beautiful vistas of the Cíes Islands, which are just off the coast. The Cíes Islands are a collection of three islands, included the Galicia National Park. They are particularly special because they have been so well-preserved, and the diverse natural fauna and flora is protected. They have wonderful walking routes and beaches. Take a ferry from Vigo and you can camp on the islands – your perfect, tranquil weekend getaway.
