The US News Today voted Miami as the best place to live in Florida. Miami is in the south-eastern part of the United States in Florida. 1. Beaches without parallel.
Miami is known for its beaches and for good reason, they really are amazing and full of character. Hollywood Beach Boardwalk is a promenade that’s busy with people cycling, skirting around on rollerbladers, and bopping to live music – just don’t be the boring person that’s walking. If you are planning to move to Miami, it’s here that you will go to people watch and get a feel for what your new neighbours are like. Meanwhile, Matheson Hammock Park is surrounded by a pretty forest of mangroves and palm trees, it has a distinctly untouched feel. Plus, it has a large saltwater pool, perfect for swimming without having to worry about what the waves are up to.
2. Brush shoulders with celebrities on a night-out.
In a survey by Time Out, Miami ranked as the second best place worldwide for nightlife. With its heady mix of new music and never-ending supply of drinks, South Beach is an absolute pull for partygoers, and it’s not uncommon to bump into a Kardashian or two when you are there. Moreover, it has multiple LGBTQI+ friendly clubs and venues.
3. The weather. Seriously the weather.
Miami really is warm year-round. The coldest month is January which boasts of average daily maximums of 20°C – the type of temperature that sends British people straight to the park for a picnic and a sunbathe. While the wettest month is October with 234mm of rain. From May to October, temperatures are in the mid to high 20s.
4. It’s a haven for golfers.
Nightlife and beach are not all that make Miami, it has a great scene for passionate golfers too. Many golf clubs have been around for decades. Miami Beach Golf Club with its ocean views (and helpful breeze) is a particular highlight.
5. The Art Deco historic district.
Reaching its peak in the 1920s and 30s, Art Deco was a modern take on neoclassical architecture. Although it once waved around Europe, Miami Beach has preserved the art deco style like nowhere else. The Art Deco neighbourhood was the first to be recognised by the National Register of Historic Places, it is made up of 800+ buildings, all built between 1923 and 1943. It was once a celebrity hangout for the likes of Clark Gable, Carole Lombard and Rita Hayworth. As well as simply being incredibly photogenic, the Art Deco district is lined with boutique hotels and walking tours.
6. Thrilling art scene.
It isn’t just Miami’s architecture that’s exciting, Miami also has a long-respected art scene. Every December, it hosts Art Basel Miami Beach, which is the second most attended art fair globally. All year long, however, Miami is a go-to place for artists and art enthusiasts alike. The Wynwood Art District is an outdoor open-air museum dedicated to street art. At my last visit, the highlight was a baby version of the Hulk in the brightest shade of green. You might struggle to put your phone down, there’s so many memorable snaps to make. Walking around, the atmosphere is so fun and creative. Additionally, there’s the Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Museum of Art and Design.
7. Start your days with unmissable Cuban coffee.
Being so close to Cuba, Miami gets its verve from Cuban coffee. The Cuban diaspora is concentrated in Little Havana, and that’s where you will want to go for your morning pick-me-up. Whether it’s a Cafecito, a sweetened Cuban expresso or a colada. While you will undoubtedly find plenty of Starbucks, you won’t want to miss out on Miami’s café culture. If you are moving to Miami full time, it’s a great way to get to know some friendly faces too.
8. Delicious food at every corner.
As well as coffee, Miami is a great place to get your empanadas, croquetas and plantains. It also has eleven restaurants with one star in the Michelin Guide, L’Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami with its contemporary French cuisine has two, and eighteen restaurants have been awarded the Bid Gourmand for good quality, good value cooking.
9. It has year-round rental appeal.
Roughly 3 million tourists visit Miami a year, so, if you are looking into property there as to rent out either for short or long-term lets, you are going to find people keen to stay. Just check out the rules in the area you are purchasing a property in first. Due to the great weather, Miami’s rental appeal is luckily not too seasonal either.
10. No personal income tax.
While talking about taxes is considerably less fun than Cuban coffee or the Wynwood Art District, a major reason to buy and/or move to Miami is that Florida has no personal income tax. It has one of the lowest tax burdens in all of the USA. Nor does it have inheritance tax. However, it does have property tax, which varies from place to place and year on year.
